Pump gearboxes, which is right for you?
Big block motors, like the ones we discussed in our last blog, deliver high amounts of torque. Hale created the K gearbox for these larger loads and flows generated by High GPM pumpers. According to their data, the G gearbox is only rated for 1600 ft/lbs of torque and 450 hp. Almost all OEMs use this as there standard gearbox for Hale pumps. Todays larger motors can deliver more than this rating, but the OEMs will cite no failures in the gearboxes and that due to parasitic drag, the actual torque output is less at the gearbox. Hale published this document in order to explain the difference. Before selecting, it is good to note the K costs more, but is it the right choice for your pump?
